Ten years ago (2000) I was advised by a fellow Senior Rate who was about to leave after completing 22 years to plan ahead regarding a second career when I leave the Service. I did exactly that.
Not much call for a UC1 or ASWD/PSD in ‘Civvy Street’ so I decided to embark on a Career within Health and Safety. So during my last five years, I concentrated on qualifying in many areas of Health and Safety and incorporated my time on board ship and in various establishments towards gaining experience within this field as well as doing the job I was paid for.
After leaving, I had several interviews for two positions reaching the final stages of both showing versatility in areas of safety from food hygiene for the 4th biggest Hilton Hotel in the world to a large company dealing with the engineering industry. Even though I fell at the last hurdle, I gained experience in interview techniques and proved I could manage Health and Safety in any industry.
Not deterred, I applied and became the Health and Safety Manager for a Demolition Company after being chosen from many other candidates. I had no experience in this field but I obtained much knowledge from books and the Internet. It was a wonderful stepping stone for the position I hold today.
The Demolition Company allowed me to meet many Clients over the months and through my contacts I received a call offering me a position as a Health and Safety Construction Site Advisor and Training Consultant. This brought a wonderful package including a new company car allowing me to travel around the UK inspecting Construction Sites, offer training to managers and staff, writing reports and advising accordingly.
The company I work for are an exciting and innovative company with a team of professionals who work hard to develop proactive and rewarding partnerships with their Clients.
If I had some advice for personnel who are leaving within five years it would be to plan ahead because believe me the time will go very quickly indeed.
I wish you all success and hopefully will meet up in the near future.
My regards
