Junior sailor of the year 2024

Sailor of the year presentation 2024

Junior Sailor Honoured On Board HMS Sutherland

Today on board HMS Sutherland I had the privilege, as the current Chairperson of the ASW Association, WO2 UW Underdown, to award LS UW Stevens the ASW Association Junior Sailor of the Year Award 2024.
Due to professional qualifying courses, leave, and ship’s programme, this was the first opportunity to conduct the presentation since the award was announced in October 2024. LS UW Stevens originally won this award while serving on board HMS Portland in 2024, and since then has joined the Fighting Clan of HMS Sutherland, where today we were able to present this prestigious recognition.

The Junior Sailor of the Year Award acknowledges those sailors who demonstrate hard work under strenuous conditions whilst providing valuable knowledge and experience towards Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) operations. It is a reflection of the professionalism and dedication shown by all our sailors, and LS UW Stevens is a worthy recipient.
I wish to thank the Commanding Officer, Cdr James Wallington-Smith RN, and his crew for their warm welcome and for hosting the ceremony on board.
This year marks the 70th Anniversary of the ASW Association, and the 2025 ASW Association Junior Sailor of the Year will be announced at our anniversary dinner on 11 October 2025.

A huge congratulations once again to LS UW Stevens on this well-deserved award.
I have just been informed from LS UW Stevens that his father was in the RN as a Sonar rate, Cyril Thomas Charles Stevens (known as Cat), trained at Vernon in 1973, anyone remember him
